Not a liquid: what Nano Polymer puncture proofing actually is

Almost every fitment at our Silverton centre starts with the same question, usually while the first wheel is still coming off the car: “Is this that goo you squeeze in through the valve?”

No. Nano Polymer puncture proofing is not a liquid. It is a coating, applied to the inside of your tyre’s tread, that cures and bonds to the rubber. Nothing sloshes when you drive and nothing pools when you park. There is no lump of dried product waiting at the bottom of the casing.

The difference matters more to us than to most workshops. Edwin Petersen manufactured a liquid tyre sealant for sixteen years before developing this treatment. He knows what liquids do inside a tyre, and that knowledge is the reason he stopped making one.

Is this the same as the sealant in a can?

No. The sealant in a can is a liquid that stays liquid inside your tyre. Nano Polymer is a coating that cures onto the inner tread and stays where we put it. One is an emergency fix you carry in the boot. The other is applied once, in a workshop, and becomes part of your tyre itself.

The cans deserve a fair word. They are sold at forecourts across South Africa as temporary get-you-home fixes, and the cans themselves say so: short distance limits, printed on the label. What a liquid does inside a spinning tyre

This part is physics, not marketing. It applies to every liquid product from every maker, including the one Edwin manufactured for sixteen years.

At speed, a liquid inside a tyre is flung outward and spreads across the tread in a film. Park, and gravity takes over: the liquid runs down and settles in a pool at the lowest point of your tyre. Pull away the next morning and it has to spread out all over again. And over months, many liquids slowly lose moisture and thicken.

None of that makes liquid sealants useless. It makes them liquids. Anything loose inside a spinning wheel keeps moving, and that matters for wheel balancing, because a shifting mass is exactly what a balancing machine exists to detect.

What the Nano Polymer coating is

A Nano Polymer tyre coating is applied to the inside of the tread, the crown, the band of rubber that meets the road. It goes on evenly, and then it cures. Curing is the whole point: the material stops being a substance carried inside your tyre and becomes a layer of your tyre, bonded to the inner wall. Tip the bottle and it pours. Tip your tyre and nothing moves.

That is also why fitment happens in a workshop and not in your driveway. Applying a coating evenly to the inside of a tread is proper workshop work, and we do it at the Silverton centre in one morning, by appointment. All five tyres are treated, and the spare is included in the job, because the spare is your tyre everyone forgets about until they need it.

Does a tyre coating affect wheel balancing?

No. Wheel balancing corrects for uneven mass, and a bonded coating adds no loose mass. The Nano Polymer treatment is applied evenly across the inner tread and cures in place, so there is no shifting weight for the wheel to fight. Balancing after treatment is the same job it was before.

The wheel balancing question is really a sealant question. A liquid redistributes every time your speed changes, and a balancing machine can only measure the wheel in whatever state it happens to be in at that moment. A cured coating has no states. It sat still yesterday. It will sit still at highway speed on the N1.

What does the coating actually seal?

Punctures in the treated tread area, as they happen. When a screw or a nail goes through the crown of your tyre, the coating closes around it. In the tread, it seals as it happens, and in most cases you can keep rolling to somewhere safe.

There is no can to reach for and no waiting for a liquid to find the hole, because the seal is already where the puncture is. What will it never do?

It does nothing for sidewalls. It does nothing for the bead, where your tyre seats against the rim. It cannot fix structural damage from an impact or a pothole, and it cannot repair damage that was already in your tyre before treatment. It does not make a tyre indestructible.

The reason is location. The coating lives on the inner tread and nowhere else. A sidewall cut or a bead leak sits outside the treated area, and so does a casing broken by a pothole. The same goes for history: a tyre that already had a slow leak or an old plug before treatment keeps that history. This is why we ask for a photo of your tread and sidewall before booking. We would rather tell you on WhatsApp that a tyre does not qualify than treat something the coating cannot help.

What exists: run-flat tyres that carry the car a limited distance after pressure loss, and internal treatments that seal tread punctures as they happen. Nothing on the market protects sidewalls from impact damage, so treat absolute claims with suspicion.
