Two services get booked interchangeably in South Africa, usually by someone who just wants the shaking to stop. Wheel alignment and wheel balancing fix different faults. Paying for the wrong one is a common way to spend money and keep the symptom.
We take wheels off and put them back every working day, so this is the plain version of the difference, and the two-symptom test that tells you which conversation to have before you book anything.
What balancing actually is
A wheel and tyre assembly is never perfectly even. Rubber, steel and the rim itself vary slightly in weight around the circumference. Spin that at highway speed and the heavy part throws the assembly off once per revolution, hundreds of times a minute.
Balancing corrects it. The wheel goes on a machine that spins it, finds where the imbalance sits, and small weights get fixed to the rim to cancel it out. That is the whole job: weight distribution around a spinning circle.
It is why balancing is done whenever a tyre comes off a rim and goes back on. Move the tyre and you move the weight.
What alignment actually is
Alignment has nothing to do with weight. It is about angles: where your wheels point relative to the road, to the car, and to each other.
Three angles do most of the work. Toe is whether the wheels point slightly inwards or outwards when viewed from above. Camber is whether the top of the wheel leans in or out when viewed from the front. Caster is the tilt of the steering axis, which affects how the steering self-centres.
Those angles are set within a specification by the manufacturer. Kerbs, potholes and worn suspension components move them. When they move, the tyre stops rolling square to the road and starts scrubbing across it slightly, every metre you drive.
How do I know if I need a balance or alignment?
Run the two-symptom test. A vibration that appears in a narrow speed band and fades again above or below it is usually balance. A car that pulls to one side on a flat straight road, or tyres wearing unevenly across the tread, is usually alignment. Vibration is balance, wander and uneven wear is alignment.

That last row catches a lot of people. Before booking anything, check your pressures against the placard in the driver's door jamb. What should I do first, alignment or balancing?
Deal with the symptom you actually have. If the car vibrates, balance. If it pulls or wears unevenly, align. When both are present, do the alignment first and then balance, because alignment work often involves moving wheels around and a balance is only meaningful once the wheels are in their final positions.
There is one sequencing rule worth remembering. Any time a tyre is removed from a rim and refitted, that wheel needs balancing again afterwards. Fitting work resets the balance whether or not anything else was wrong.
Can I do balancing without alignment?
Yes, and it is the more common of the two on its own. Balancing is tied to the wheel and tyre assembly, so it gets done whenever tyres are fitted, rotated or refitted, regardless of what the angles are doing. Alignment is only needed when the angles have actually moved.
The reverse is less true. If you have had alignment work done that involved pulling wheels off, ask whether they were balanced afterwards.
As for how often, use the interval in your owner's manual rather than a number from the internet, and add a check after any solid kerb strike, deep pothole, or suspension and steering work. Those are the events that move angles.

Worth saying plainly: the coating does nothing for alignment, nothing for sidewalls, and nothing for damage already in a casing. It seals punctures in the tread it is applied to. That is the job it does, and the whole of it.
